What’s That Noise? Common Issues with Home Heating Systems

We can help you determine if your boiler or furnace needs a heating repair.

A big part of being a homeowner is using your senses to identify issues with your property. Sometimes that means noticing discoloration in a wall or ceiling where a pipe may be leaking. Sometimes, it’s about sniffing out a part of your kitchen where an outlet might have burned out.

But when it comes to your home’s heating equipment, your sense of hearing can be an essential tool in identifying service issues and addressing them fast. Western Massachusetts homeowners contact FSi Oil Services all the time, asking about weird noises from their boilers and furnaces. Sometimes, the issue can be resolved with a DIY fix, but often, we need to come over for a heating repair. In this article, we’ll help you know the difference.

Loud Banging or Popping

Let’s start with a general note: a well-operating heating system (boiler or furnace) should run relatively quietly. Occasional noises can happen and shouldn’t worry you if other service issues don’t accompany them.

That said, if your furnace is making banging noises, it could signal a problem. Abnormal air pressure in the ducts, often caused by a clogged filter, flimsy or undersized ducts, or closed vents, may be the culprit. Change your air filter and see if that ends the banging. If not, please schedule an inspection to address the problem.

Boilers can also experience banging noises. In steam systems, air leaks into the pipes through defective valves, broken bleed screws, leaks or previous repairs, causing pressure to build and create banging sounds. Closed-loop hot water boilers may also face issues if air enters the system.

Another common cause is the expansion tank, which manages water’s expansion and contraction. If it malfunctions, air may be drawn back into the boiler, leading to noise. Regular maintenance can help prevent these problems.

Humming Noises

A loud humming or whirring noise often signals that your furnace motor is overworked or hasn’t been properly maintained. Left unchecked, it can malfunction or even burn out. Please schedule service right away with the FSi team to prevent a no-heat emergency.

Scraping, Squealing and Rattling

A scraping noise often points to worn blower motor bearings. If you hear this, turn off your furnace immediately to prevent further damage and call for service. Squealing typically indicates a blower motor that needs lubrication or a loose belt — common in older systems. Rattling or vibrating sounds often mean the blower wheel or motor is out of balance.

Oil-fired furnaces can also develop oil pump noises, such as whining, buzzing or rattling. Each sound signals a different internal issue. Our trained technicians can identify the cause and fix the problem before it leads to a breakdown.

Whistling

A whistling sound coming from your boiler is usually caused by limescale buildup around the heat exchanger, a problem known as “kettling.” This buildup restricts air and water flow, forcing the boiler to work harder and use more energy. If you hear this noise, call a professional for service.

With furnaces, whistling often points to a dirty air filter that’s limiting airflow. All warm-air systems rely on clean filters to operate properly, so check yours every few months during heating season and clean or replace it as directed in your owner’s manual.
